3/16” Insert is hard and fast, and snappy, like a high tensioned marching snare
1/4” Insert is softer and buttery and floaty and feels great with a marching head at high tension like a Carlos Botello pad, but press buzzes die a bit earlier than the 3/16” with a marching head. It also works as a harder rudimental concert or jazz surface etc with a coated or calftone head
1/2” foam is like the old Remo pads, maybe a bit deader at low volume but really fun and bouncy at medium to loud volume like a rope drum
